So it’s been exactly a month since we (Carter, Joe, and I) deactivated our Facebooks. We were hoping to enjoy a more fulfilling and fruitful life without the great big, blue and white, time sucking monster we fondly call Facebook. We were on Facebook so much that we actually turned it in to a VERB. “I was Facebooking Becky, and the slut was hanging with Matt like a witch in Salem. Skaaank.” The general feeling was that life would be better without Facebook. I mean, how often do people wish for more time in the day? Wouldn’t the absence of Facebook allow for more productive behavior- and less worthless stalking of girls you never got to hook up with, but wanted to hook up with, in high school? We thought, yes. Now that a Facebook-less month is over, I want to clear some things up:
There are pro’s and con’s to Facebook. Did we have more time? Absolutely. Does this mean we allocated this extra time to homework, going to the gym, or self-help dvd’s? No. In fact, every single one of us experienced a slip in our grades. We did LESS homework without Facebook. Reason being we weren’t at our computers. Our viewing of T.V. grew exponentially from just about never watching the tube, to tuning in to behind the music marathons for entire days. We sat around and sang nonsensical songs. We ate. Oh man, we ate a lot of food. I think most alarming for us was the inability to find out that Brooke got her car broken into, and we didn’t even know for 4 hours. Sad day.
The Facebook-less life wasn’t all that bad, though, we find ourselves contemplating our return. See, Joe, Carter, and I learned to entertain ourselves. Bonded, and what not- leave the gay jokes behind. We could go to parties, act like jackass’, and not really have to worry about the pictures that were going to be tagged. We weren’t worried about our e-image. However, this concept is somewhat of a double-edged sword. While our fear of looking stupid on Facebook had declined. So had the satisfaction of a night well partied when all there was to reminisce were some hazy memories.
I guess what I’m trying to say is I’m somewhat glad to be back. I enjoy keeping tabs on my friends from back home, and stalking gym girl. But there are some valuable lessons to be taken from this experiment. There is a happy medium when dealing with the internet. One can maintain an e-profile without obsessing over theirs and others. Facebook is not the only mode of communication. Text is great, but calling is better. There’s nothing like getting all of your honeys in order via spoken word- it make’s me feel like one of those skits in a rap album. “Yeaa shawty- so when you gunna roll through?”
Just in time for the holiday season: we’re back. It’s time to plan surprisingly un-sweet big group get-togethers with our high school friends. Hey, I can’t wait.
